Dr. Sharon Mitchell received her doctoral degree in human sexuality from the Institute for the Advanced Study of Human Sexuality in San Francisco. She completed additional training in Los Angeles at the Adult Industry Medical (AIM) Healthcare Foundation, which she founded to further her dedication to providing specifically targeted care that ensures the well-being of adult film workers.

Dr. Mitchell is active in all forms of local and national government and is considered an activist and an educator for sex workers all over the world. AIM has become affiliated with government health services in Los Angeles County and at the national level. She regularly speaks about HIV prevention education throughout the United States, and has traveled to Hungary and South Africa to address community leaders and sex workers there. She has been a featured speaker at the annual U.S. Conference on AIDS, and she organizes fundraisers and convinces companies and individuals to donate to AIM's programs.

Her long-term goal is to emphasize sex workers' rights and to encourage their independent decision making. She is also developing harm reduction programs for sexually active adults, teens, and drug users to minimize behavioral risks to themselves and others.
