R. Paul Robertson, MD

    Dr. R. Paul Robertson, president and scientific director of the Pacific Northwest Diabetes Research Institute (PNDRI), completed his doctoral work at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, followed by an internal medicine residency and an endocrinology and metabolism fellowship at the University of Washington.

    Prior to joining PNDRI, Dr. Robertson was the Pennock Chair for Diabetes Research and director of the Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolism Division at the University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis. He has been elected to the American Society of Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians. He is incoming president of Medicine and Science for the American Diabetes Association.

    Dr. Robertson has been editor of Diabetes and of the American Journal of Physiology, chair of the National Institutes of Health Metabolism Study Section, a member of the Journal of Biological Chemistry editorial board, and editor-in-chief of Endocrine Reviews. He has received the Moses Barron Award, the William C. Stadie Award, and the Albert Renold Medal from the American Diabetes Association.

    Dr. Robertson is professor of pharmacology and medicine at the University of Washington, and has published nearly 300 manuscripts. His research interests focus on glucose regulation of pancreatic islet gene expression and the abnormal consequences on gene expression caused by glucose toxicity. He is also very actively involved in metabolic studies of type 1 diabetic patients who have successfully received pancreas and pancreatic islet transplantation.
