Jose A. Vazquez, MD, FACP, FIDSA

    Dr. Vazquez is Senior Staff of the Infectious Diseases Unit and Director of Infectious and Microbiology Translational Research Center at Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, Michigan. In addition to his positions at Henry Ford Hospital, Dr. Vazquez is Professor of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan. He received his medical training at the Universidad Catolica Madre y Maestra in the Dominican Republic. He completed his internship and a residency in internal medicine at the University of Health Sciences/The Chicago Medical School in North Chicago, Illinois, and served a three-year fellowship in infectious diseases at Wayne State University School of Medicine.

    Dr. Vazquez has been recognized for his research in infectious diseases and received the Infectious Diseases Society of America Young Investigator Award in Infectious Diseases Research. He has published over 300 articles, abstracts, and book chapters, and is an ad hoc reviewer for Clinical Infectious Diseases, Journal of Infectious Diseases, Journal of Critical Illness, Annals of Internal Medicine, Medical Mycology, Mayo Proceedings, Micologia, Antimicrobial Agentsand Chemotherapy, and Journal of Clinical Microbiology.

    His basic research interests are focused on the molecular epidemiology of fungal infections, mechanisms of antifungal resistance, antifungal susceptibility, and the rapid diagnosis of fungal infections. Dr. Vazquez's clinical research interests include the diagnosis and treatment of mucosal and systemic fungal infections, and participation in phase II, phase III, and phase IV clinical trials evaluating new antimicrobials and antifungals in the management of candidemia, invasive candidiasis, aspergillosis, Gram-positive bacteremias, skin/soft tissue infections, and respiratory tract infections.

    Dr. Vazquez serves on the scientific advisory board of the Comprehensive AIDS Alliance of Detroit, and is a member of the Mycosis Study Group.
