John Nance, JD

    John J. Nance brings his background in law, safety, aviation and broadcasting to the work he has done with physicians, hospitals, and clinics nationwide in the fields of leadership and mistakes.  Mr. Nance was a founding member of the National Patient Safety Foundation at the American Medical Association (AMA) and a member of the AMA's Executive Committee since 1999. He is a pioneer in the Crew Resource Management (CRM) aviation safety model and bringing the model to bear in medicine, and a vocal advocate of eliminating the tort system's involvement in medical accidents and mistakes. Mr. Nance's book about safety in human systems, Blind Trust, was published in 1986 by William Morrow and Company. His book Why Hospitals Should Fly was published in 2008 by Second River Healthcare Press.  He is the author of 17 works of non-fiction and fiction.

    Mr. Nance has been an advocate in the media for both medical/patient safety and aviation safety, appearing on Oprah, the PBS News Hour, Today, CNN, and joining ABC World News and Good Morning America in 1994. His editorials have been published in newspapers around the country, including the Los Angeles Times and USA Today.  He is a frequent speaker for the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and other healthcare organizations.

    A native Texan who grew up in Dallas, Mr. Nance earned his bachelor's degree from Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas, and his juris doctor degree from the SMU School of Law. He was named a distinguished alumni of Southern Methodist University in 2002, and is a member of the Texas State Bar Association. Mr. Nance is also a decorated Air Force officer-pilot veteran of Vietnam and Operations Desert Storm/Desert Shield, a Lt. Colonel in the USAF Reserve, and a pioneer in Air Force human factors flight safety education.  Mr. Nance lives in Seattle, Washington.
