Dr. Imtiaz Alam is the founding medical director of the Austin Hepatitis Center in Austin, Tex., and acting chief of gastroenterology and hepatology at the Brackenridge Hospital in Austin.

Dr. Alam received his medical degree from the University of Dundee in Scotland. He completed his residency at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia, and his gastroenterology and hepatology fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco. While in San Francisco, Dr. Alam worked as a National Institutes of Health research fellow, focusing his basic science research on the complications of chronic liver diseases. From 1996 to 1998, Dr. Alam was an assistant professor of medicine at Texas A&M College of Medicine, and in 1998, Dr. Alam started the Austin Hepatitis Center. Board-certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology, Dr. Alam maintains one of the largest private practices in the country devoted to liver diseases.

Dr. Alam serves as the principal investigator for many Phase 1 to Phase 3 drug trials. He has written and published numerous articles for peer-reviewed journals. He lectures frequently on gastrointestinal and liver disease-related topics to his medical peers and to the general public.
