Francesco Rubino, MD

Dr. Francesco Rubino is associate professor of surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College and chief of gastrointestinal metabolic surgery and director of the Diabetes Surgery Center at Weill Cornell-NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City.

Dr. Rubino is a world-renowned pioneer of surgery for type 2 diabetes, an emerging specialty which holds great promise for advancing both the understanding and treatment of diabetes. He was the first to demonstrate that gastric bypass surgery can improve type 2 diabetes through direct anti-diabetic mechanisms and not solely as a result of weight loss. Based on his research findings he proposed an original scientific theory, which suggests that a malfunctioning of the small bowel could be one of the possible root causes of type 2 diabetes.

Dr. Rubino also conceived and organized the influential Diabetes Surgery Summit, (International Consensus Conference on Gastrointestinal Surgery for Type 2 Diabetes) held in Rome in March 2007. The Rome summit established the field of diabetes and metabolic surgery, making international recommendations for the use of surgery and creating an International Diabetes Surgery Task Force on which Dr. Rubino serves as a founding member. Dr Rubino also conceived and directed the 1st World Congress on Interventional Therapies for Type 2 Diabetes held on September 15-16, 2008 in New York.

Dr. Rubino offers clinical expertise in numerous laparoscopic approaches to metabolic and weight-loss surgery-including: Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), gastric banding, sleeve gastrectomy and laparoscopic redo surgery for failed bariatric procedures-and laparoscopic digestive surgery. His research interests include studying mechanisms of diabetes and appetite control following gastrointestinal surgery and the use and study of endoluminal and transgastric approaches to bariatric and diabetes surgery.

Before joining New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical College, Dr. Rubino was an assistant professor of surgery at the Catholic University of Rome, Italy. He received his medical degree and completed his residency in general surgery at the Catholic University of Rome, Italy. He completed a clinical fellowships in laparoscopic surgery at the European Institute of Telesurgery in Strasbourg, France; and research fellowship at Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York and the Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Rubino is also a member of various professional organizations, and recipient of numerous awards. He has given hundreds of presentations throughout the world in international medical conferences and is the author of more than 70 articles in peer-reviewed journals and more than 200 other types of publications.
