Dr. Edward Shahady is a graduate of Wheeling Jesuit University in Wheeling, West Virginia, and West Virginia University School of Medicine in Morgantown, West Virginia, and is board-certified in family medicine and clinical lipidology.

He has contributed over 140 scientific articles and 5 books to the medical literature in the areas of sports medicine, musculoskeletal medicine, behavioral science, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, physician retirement and the contribution of family medicine to effective health systems. He serves on the editorial boards of Consultant, Pediatric Consultant, and the Journal of Clinical Lipidology.

He is the recipient of multiple awards, including the distinguished alumni awards from West Virginia University School of Medicine and Wheeling Jesuit University, the American Academy of Family Physicians Thomas Johnson Award, the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) Recognition award and multiple teaching awards from students and residents at three medical schools. In 2005, he received the Art of Medicine award from the Florida Academy of Family Physicians (FAFP) for lifetime achievement in medicine, and the Association of American Medical Colleges' Humanitarian Award from Florida State University School of Medicine.

He is a past president of the STFM and its foundation and the FAFP Foundation. He served as chairman of family medicine at the University of North Carolina from 1976 to 1986. His current academic appointments include adjunct professor of family medicine at the University of North Carolina, clinical professor at the University of Miami and clinical professor at the University of Florida. He is the medical director of the FAFP/F Diabetes Master Clinician Program.He serves on the Governor's Diabetes Advisory Committee in Florida and several other national diabetes advisory committees. He is chair-elect of the Florida Alliance for Diabetes Prevention and Treatment.

He has lectured extensively both internationally and nationally. He is well known for his enthusiastic teaching style and ability to help learners at all levels understand complex clinical issues.
