Welcome to Project Oncology on ReachMD. On this episode, Dr. Triparna Sen will share advice for early-career clinicians and researchers attending the 2026 World Conference on Lung Cancer. Dr. Sen is the Max Morehouse Endowed Chair in Cancer Research and Associate Director of Research for the Division of Medical Oncology at The Ohio State University, as well as the Director of the Lung Cancer Preclinical Therapeutics Platform at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center. Let’s hear from her now.
Dr. Sen:
I think this is a great networking opportunity. First of all, please make an agenda beforehand. Don't just wing it. When I was an early investigator attending these large conferences, they could get overwhelming. Don't try to wing it. There are concurrent sessions, so please make an agenda, look at the talks beforehand, and try to optimize your time. Go to the sessions that may be, of course, overlapping to your research area, but also that could be something that you might want to do in future.
Network, network, network. This is an area where the leaders in the field actually come, so please don't be shy. Go and network with them. Send them an email early on, and try to talk to them during networking sessions, between the sessions, and after their talks. I think this is a great platform to do that.
There are various educational sessions; attend them. ISLC does amazing career development workshops; I'm participating in the career development workshops that have grant-writing sessions. I would really recommend that the early-career investigators and clinicians attend those workshops. There are workshops on protocol development, how to write a clinical trial, how to develop manuscripts, and how to write grants. So really make use of all of these sessions. Talk to early-stage investigators who might be in the same stage as you are now. So really network, talk to people, and maximize the time. And have fun! Really have fun.
