Any physician performing filler injections should consider becoming comfortable with putting filler in unusual places such as the neck and chin, according to Dee Anna Glaser, MD.
Dr. Glaser presented as part of “Neuromodulators and Dermal Fillers: What’s New, What’s Coming and What Are We Doing That’s New in 2025” at the Maui Derm Hawaii 2025 meeting in Maui, Hawaii.
“A lot of our patients really need this, so I would encourage you to think about it,” Dr. Glaser said of injecting filler into the forehead.
She cited a recent study indicating that the supraperiosteal application of CaHA and HA for forehead treatment demonstrates superior efficacy in addressing signs of aging compared to the isolated use of CaHA.1
Of course, injecting in this area is not without risk. Intravascular injections can cause blindness or strokes, among other adverse outcomes, Dr. Glaser said, and fat and thin muscles are scarce. Visible irregularities can be difficult to camouflage.
“It is a little bit scary, and you should have a healthy respect for it,” she said.
The chin, meanwhile, can be an important determinant of attractiveness,2 Dr. Glaser noted.
“Getting comfortable with treating the chin, I think, is very important,” she said.
Similar to the nose, however, the chin should not be approached in the same way for every patient.
“You have to respect their genetic background, their family background,” Dr. Glaser said.
A new type of filler, HASHA, that has an HA concentration of 25 mg/mL and a G’ of 916 Pa has been recommended for the chin area becayse of its high degree of correction/projection with lower injection volumes, especially in patients with pronounced chin retrusion, together with a long duration of effect and good overall safety.3
While Dr. Glaser said she has achieved favorable outcomes with HASHA, she emphasized that the key is the injector, and each doctor should use the fillers with which they feel most comfortable.
“It’s what you’re doing with it,” she said. “You are the key to success and the key to avoiding complications.”
