What to Expect at the 2023 APA Annual Meeting

You’re listening to NeuroFrontiers on ReachMD.  On this episode, we’ll hear from Dr. Raj Tampi, who is a Professor and Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at Creighton School of Medicine.  Dr. Tampi is here to give us a breakdown of some of the key presentations at the 2023 American Psychiatric Association Annual Meeting.  Let’s hear from him now. 

Dr. Tampi:
The APA Annual Meeting is one of the major psychiatry meetings in the world.  It is the largest psychiatry meeting, so I go there not just to learn; I also go to network, so my going to the APA is to meet general psychiatrists, other mental health professionals, , neurologists, whoever is attending the APA meeting so I can learn from them and we can share the knowledge. 

With regards to dementia, there are a couple of sessions run by my colleagues.  There is actually a course on assessment of neurocognitive disorders run by my dear friend,  Dr. Allan Anderson from Banner Health, so he’s running it with a few of my other colleagues from the AAGP, so  if you could attend those, that will be great.  It’s a paid course,  but you will get a good education on how to assess neurocognitive disorders.  Then on  Sunday is my session on BPS—it’s the Clinician’s Guide to Management of Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia.   We will be talking about all the aspects of management of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia. 

There are many other sessions that I am going to go to, which are mainly with regards to equity and diversity, which is a great thing in the United States right now with all what’s happening politically.  So there are excellent sessions on International Medical Graduate, and I am an International Medical Graduate and the past President of the IMG Caucus of the APA, so I will be attending those sessions, and then I will be attending sessions on interventional psychiatry, TMS, which is transcranial magnetic stimulation, ECT,  using psychedelics in psychiatry.

So overall, I’m planning to not just attend sessions but also meet with colleagues and other folks who are in the mental health field.
