So when I have conversations with parents about myopia and what we can do about it, I like to always say, “We now know better, so we have to do better. We have to do something about it.” We don't just treat myopia. We manage it. So I tell patients we have lots of options. Our first one is to just put the patient in regular single-vision glasses or contact lenses. That is an option. That's not the option I would choose for them, or really even my own child, but it is an option. That's the traditional way of treating myopia.
I'm very aware that this is usually a very new concept for them, so I try to break it down as easily as I can. So what I typically say is that “Myopia, as you probably understand, is near-sightedness, but we know so much more about myopia now than we did like when you and I were kids. Myopia is elongation of the eye. The eye is physically getting longer, and it's getting thinner as the child ages, so because our kids are living in a digital age, they're at more risk for advancing myopia than we were.”
So what does that actually mean? What does that relate to? As the retina gets thinner, they're at higher risk for retinal issues like glaucoma, macular degeneration, cataracts, and something blinding called myopic maculopathy. What we can change is putting them into something that will positively impact their vision, and that's an FDA-approved myopia control option, which is MiSight®. So the MiSight® lens has two purposes. The first purpose is to correct the child's vision. It will give your child fantastic vision. The treatment zone, which is arguably more important, will slow axial elongation, which is really, really important. That's the goal. The goal is to at least slow the progression and the prescription by 50 percent, and the MiSight® lens is more than capable of doing that.
