The Zika virus is spread mainly through the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito. Many who become infected with Zika will not even know that they’ve contracted the disease because symptoms are often mild. For women, however, infection during pregnancy can cause a serious birth defect of the brain called microcephaly and other severe brain defects.
