  • Overview

Recently, the American Heart Association (AHA) published a presidential advisory on Cardiovascular Kidney Metabolic (CKM) health to provide more guidance on definition, staging, prediction strategies, and algorithms for the prevention and treatment of CKM syndrome to optimize CKM health.

In this series of 4 episodes, two cardiologists and a nephrologist provide an overview on the definition, staging, screening and management of CKM syndrome in a multidisciplinary approach.

Watch all episodes, answer pre- and post-test questions, and start earning CME credits.

  • Program Highlights

This educational program consists of 4 presentations on CKM syndrome.

Definition and staging of CKM syndrome - Carolyn Lam, MD, PhD - Singapore

    • How is the CKM syndrome defined and what are the different CKM stages? In this presentation, Carolyn Lam provides an overview on these topics.

Screening for CKM syndrome - Jürgen Floege, MD – Aachen, Germany

    • Jürgen Floege explains how to screen for the CKM syndrome, and focusses on eGFR and albuminuria as predictors of CKD and CVD risk.

Comprehensive management of individuals with CKM syndrome - Muthiah Vaduganathan, MD – Boston, MA, US

    • Combination therapy may substantially reduce cardiorenal morbidity and mortality in patients with CKM syndrome. Muthiah Vaduganathan talks about 4 therapeutic pillars in CKM syndrome.

Case-based learning and future directions - Carolyn Lam, MD, PhD (Singapore), Jürgen Floege, MD (Aachen, Germany) and Muthiah Vaduganathan, MD (Boston, MA, US)

    • The panel discusses the optimal management of a female patient of 73 years with long-standing T2D, obesity, proteinuria and hyperlipidemia. What are their recommendations?

  • Learning Objectives

After participating in this educational activity, participants should be better able to:

    • Apply the cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) staging framework to identify and classify patients at different levels of syndromic severity
    • Utilize CKM risk prediction algorithms that prioritize cardiorenal health to guide clinical decision-making
    • Develop comprehensive, guideline-concordant treatment plans for patients with CKM syndrome, incorporating lifestyle inventions, appropriate pharmacological therapies, and interdisciplinary care approaches
    • Integrate the latest clinical trial data and guideline recommendations to optimize cardiovascular risk reduction strategies in patients with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease
  • Target Audience

This educational activity is designed for all healthcare professionals with an interest in management of patients with CKM syndrome.

  • Accreditation and Credit Designation Statements

This enduring activity is accredited by the European Board for Accreditation of Continuing Education for Health Professional (EBAC) for 60 minutes of effective education time.

Through an agreement between EBAC and the American Medical Association, physicians may convert EBAC External CME credits to AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Information on the process to convert EBAC credit to AMA credit can be found on the AMA website. Other health care professionals may obtain from the AMA a certificate of having participated in an activity eligible for conversion of credit to AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™.

  • Provider(s)/Educational Partner(s)

Today’s healthcare environment is constantly evolving and advances of medical science occur at an accelerating pace. CME/CE plays an important role in the clinical environment and is an essential element of physician training, learning, and improvement, thereby importantly contributing to optimal patient care. Since 2000, MEDCON’s mission is to deliver high quality within the world of medical education by creating forums like PACE-CME, organizing live meetings, and providing online education.  We aim to stimulate the review, exchange, and assimilation of key scientific findings to improve patients’ health, to raise awareness of new science underlying various disease states, and to accelerate the translation of this information into clinical practice.
