During the 2022 mpox outbreak, New York City emerged as the epicenter, with disproportionate impacts on gay and bisexual men. A new study presented at IDWeek 2025 examines how HIV-related factors, such as CD4 count, ART status, and syphilis co-infection, shaped mpox severity and hospitalization risk. The findings reveal critical disparities, including significantly higher hospitalization rates among non-Hispanic Black patients and those not on ART. Tune in to hear Dr. Ofole Mgbako share key clinical insights that can help guide early intervention and equitable care in future outbreaks. Not only is Dr. Mgbako an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Population Health at NYU Langone Health, but he’s also the Section Chief of Infectious Diseases and the Director of the HIV Equity Research Program at NYC Health and Hospitals Bellevue.
