Overview
Dr. Maurice Pickard discusses with Dr. Jorge Girotti the Hispanic Centers for Excellence. Thirty-four medical schools utilize these centers, which are trying to meet the need for increasing Hispanic physicians. At a time when the United States's largest minority is widening it's lead, health care disparities are unfortunately worsening for Latinos. This year our government will fund only 4 of these centers under Title VII, forcing several to close. Because of this issue, their mentoring efforts to improve academic performance among Latino students will be lost, and with that may go several opportunities to foster careers in medicine.
