Louis M. Kwong, MD, FACS

    Louis M. Kwong, MD, FACS, a native of Los Angeles, and fourth generation Californian, is an Orthopaedic Surgeon specializing in joint replacement and arthritis surgery. In his academic practice, Dr. Kwong is Vice Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Medical Director of the Orthopaedic Clinics, Chief of the Orthopaedic Arthritis Service, and Program Director of Orthopaedic Residency Training at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. In his private practice, he is an Attending Physician at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. He is a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery in the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.

    Dr. Kwong's area of research is in the field of thrombosis. He is a member of the International Surgical Thrombosis Forum (ISTF) and has served as a steering committee member and principal investigator in multiple clinical trials involving warfarin, low molecular weight heparin, indirect and direct thrombin inhibitors, as well as indirect and direct factor Xa inhibitors. A recipient of the John Charnley Award for contributions in the field of hip surgery, Louis Kwong, M.D. is also involved in orthopaedic instrument and implant design, and holds a patent for a debris isolating prosthetic hip joint.

    Dr. Kwong has served as a rescue physician in the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD) Air 5 helicopter program for over 17 years. Dr. Kwong is currently the Medical Director of the LASD Reserve Forces Emergency Medical Technician Training Program.

    With the Department of Health & Human Service, Dr. Kwong volunteers as the chief medical officer on the National Medical Response Team - Western Region for WMD (Weapons of Mass Destruction) response. Additionally he is a medical officer on Disaster Medical Assistance Team (DMAT) California-9, and is an advisor to the FBI on chemical weapons.

    Dr. Kwong travels extensively internationally for research and the teaching of orthopaedic surgery. He has provided humanitarian surgery in various parts of the world including the treatment of gunshot and blast injuries in Bosnia during the Balkan War, deployment to New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina for 3 medical strike team missions for the Department of Homeland Security, and led the only American team to China following the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake.
