    Dr. Joseph H. Gorman, III, is associate professor of surgery at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia. Dr. Gorman received a BS in chemical engineering magna cum laude from the New Jersey Institute of Technology and an MD with honors from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in Newark. Dr. Gorman completed residencies in general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. While a resident, he completed a two year National Institutes of Health funded post-doctoral fellowship in the laboratory of Henry Edmunds during which he did ground breaking research in the field of cardiac remodeling, mitral valve disease and cardiac imaging.

    Dr. Gorman currently co-directs the Gorman Cardiovascular Research Group, a heart failure and cardiovascular device design laboratory, funded by several investigator initiated awards from the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association, as well as corporate collaborative contracts. His research group also collaborates with basic scientists and engineers at academic institutions throughout the country. His research interests include the pathophysiology and treatment of heart failure, ventricular assist device design, percutaneous valve repair/replacement, design of heart valve repair and replacement devices, catheter based treatments for structural heart disease, cardiac imaging with MRI, CT, real-time 3D echocardiography and NIR spectroscopy, mitral valve physiology, ventricular pacing for heart failure, valve calcification, and biocompatibility of synthetic surfaces.

    Dr. Gorman is board-certified in both general and cardiothoracic surgery. In addition to his research efforts, he performs an extensive amount of esophageal surgery for malignant and benign disease. Dr. Gorman has served on numerous study sections and advisory committees for both the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association. He has published over 100 original articles, chapters and reviews. Dr. Gorman has mentored over 20 post-doctoral fellows, medical students, graduate students and undergraduates.
