Erin D. Michos, MD, MHS, FACC, FAHA is a preventive cardiologist and epidemiologist. She is an Associate Professor of Medicine within the Division of Cardiology at Johns Hopkins University. She also holds a joint appointment in the Department of Epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She is the Associate Director of Preventive Cardiology and an Associate Faculty of the Welch Center for Prevention, Epidemiology and Clinical research at Johns Hopkins. She spends 65% effort devoted to research, 10% administrative time, and 25% effort for clinical responsibilities (preventive outpatient clinic and echo lab).
Her research focuses on preventive cardiology and epidemiology including: (1) CVD among women; (2) risk prediction for cardiovascular disease (CVD) including coronary artery calcium scores and novel biomarkers; (3) lipids and statin therapy; (4) inflammation and CVD; (5) physical activity and nutrition; (4) vitamin D.
Dr. Michos has extensive experience as an investigator in both cohort studies and clinical trials, and with CVD event adjudication. She is a co-investigator for the NIH-funded Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) cohort and a Field Center PI for several ancillary studies for MESA Exams 5 and 6. Dr. Michos is also a co-investigator in the MultiCenter AIDS Cohort Study (MACS). She is a co-investigator in the NIH-funded Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) cohort, where she adjudicates coronary heart disease events. In ARIC, she also received R01 funding to lead an ancillary study examining the relation of vitamin D-related metabolites with cognitive and stroke outcomes. She is also a co-investigator in the NIH-funded STudy to Understand Fall Reduction and Vitamin D in You (STURDY) randomized clinical trial. In STURDY, Dr. Michos is the clinical site director for the Washington County, MD site and is part of the Executive Leadership team.
Dr. Michos has authored or co-authored over 220 manuscripts or book chapters published in peer-reviewed journals/textbooks. Her work has been highly cited with an H-index of 45 and over 16,000 citations. She is actively involved with teaching of medical students, public health students, residents, and postdoctoral fellows. She is one of the faculty mentors involved in three T32 post-doctoral training grants at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Bloomberg School of Public. She is a faculty mentor for the Medical Student Training in Aging (MSTAR) summer program funded by the National Institute on Aging.
Dr. Michos has participated in multiple national and international society guidelines and position statements. She was a member of the writing committee for the 2007 American Heart Association (AHA) Women’s Prevention Guidelines and is currently a committee member for the upcoming 2019 ACC/AHA Prevention Guidelines. Dr. Michos was also a writing member of the 2017 American Diabetes Association (ADA) position statement on Hypertension management and a current workgroup member for the KDIGO Management of Diabetes and Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Guidelines.
Dr. Michos has a long history of service to the American Heart Association (AHA) and is a FAHA. She was a member of the local Baltimore AHA board. She previously was part of the AHA Women in Cardiology committee, and she just recently joined the AHA Funding Subcommittee. She is the Fellowship Training Director for the AHA Go Red for Women (GRFW) Strategic Focus Research Network (SFRN) at Johns Hopkins. She is also one of the Co-I for the Population Core for that GRFW SFRN grant. She is also part of the planning committee for the upcoming 2019 AHA Research Leadership Academy to be held in Baltimore.
