Dr. David Malcolm Ward is professor of clinical medicine, department of medicine, School of Medicine, at the University of California, San Diego. He is also an attending physician, director of the Apheresis Program and associate medical director of Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation at the University of California San Diego Medical Center.

Dr. Ward trained in internal medicine and nephrology in the University Department of Medicine Unit at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Scotland, UK (1971-1975). He resumed active clinical practice at UCSD in 1977 as a faculty clinician in nephrology. As chief of clinical nephrology from 1979 to 1998, he directed diversification and expansion of the clinical nephrology program at UCSD. His special interests include immunological renal diseases, glomerular diseases, kidney diseases in pregnancy, acute and chronic renal failure, innovative hemodialysis techniques, transplantation medicine, and the therapeutic uses of plasmapheresis and cytapheresis. 

As the regional expert on apheresis techniques and applications, Dr. Ward has a consultation practice throughout the southwestern U.S.A. He has a similar practice as a regional expert in immunological and glomerular renal diseases, including the performance and interpretation of renal biopsies. Dr. Ward remains active in all aspects of clinical nephrology, apheresis medicine, transplantation medicine, and some general internal medicine.

Dr. Ward has been recognized as a consistent advocate of clinical excellence in academic medicine, and in 1997 he received the "Doctor of the Year" award of excellence by UCSD Medical Center.
