Christian A. Bermudez, MD Surgical Director, Lung Transplantation and ECMO; Director of Thoracic Transplantation Associate Professor of Surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania A cardiothoracic surgeon, Dr. Bermudez received his medical degree from the University of Concepción School of Medicine, in Concepción, Chile. He subsequently completed an advanced fellowship in cardiac surgery at the Mayo Clinic, followed by a fellowship in cardiothoracic transplantation and mechanical circulatory support at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. In addition to lung transplantation, Dr. Bermudez' clinical expertise includes advanced procedures for heart failure, including revascularization, valvular procedures and thrombo-endarterectomy for chronic pulmonary hypertension. Dr. Bermudez is board-certified in general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery. He sees patients at the Heart and Vascular Center and the Harron Lung Center in the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine. His research has focused on methods to improve organ preservation for cardiothoracic transplantation and the study of short- and midterm cardiopulmonary support systems to be used as a bridge to cardiopulmonary transplantation.
