Transforming Pain Management for Dialysis Patients: Skill Training Approaches

Transforming Pain Management for Dialysis Patients Skill Training Approaches
02/13/2025

New developments in chronic pain management for dialysis patients promote the use of coping skills training, offering an alternative to traditional opioid treatments.

The Challenge of Chronic Pain in Dialysis

Patients undergoing hemodialysis frequently face the challenge of managing chronic pain. Traditional reliance on opioid medications often results in poor outcomes and poses significant risks, highlighting the need for effective non-opioid strategies to enhance patients' quality of life.

Recent studies indicate that pain coping skills training (PCST), leveraging cognitive behavioral therapy, can effectively tackle these challenges.

Assessment of Pain Coping Skills Training (PCST)

An extensive randomized controlled trial with 643 participants from various medical facilities evaluated the efficacy of PCST. Half of the participants engaged in intensive PCST sessions during the trial.

By the 12th week, participants receiving PCST exhibited a significant reduction in pain interference scores (-0.49 difference; P= .009), demonstrating meaningful improvements over standard care. For detailed findings, refer to the published results.

Future Directions and Opportunities in Pain Management

Incorporating PCST into routine care presents long-term advantages, potentially reducing opioid dependency and improving patient welfare through sustainable pain management practices.

Healthcare professionals are encouraged to integrate these cognitive behavioral strategies within their care models, contributing to broader healthcare reforms and a focus on patient-centered healthcare solutions. Further insights are available in the relevant journal article.
