Health Promotion Strategic Framework
Non-communicable diseases pose significant challenges globally, especially in isolated communities like St Helena. The Health Promotion Strategic Framework targets lifestyle-related risk factors through community initiatives, aiming to create a healthier environment on the island.
The framework focuses on modifiable risk factors such as smoking and obesity. By encouraging the reduction of unhealthy food consumption and increased physical activity, St Helena seeks to foster a community that embraces healthy living. Among its initiatives, reducing high sugar drink consumption and promoting smoke-free policies have been pivotal.
"Developing community ‘health literacy’ so that they can take advantage of the opportunities created to help them be healthier."
Outcome measures from 2018-2019 underline the framework's success, noting increased smoker cessation attempts and higher participation in physical activities. Local surveys have been essential for assessing these lifestyle changes, making data-driven evaluations a cornerstone of the strategic framework.
Training Health Professionals
Improving practitioners' skills is crucial for effective patient interaction, particularly concerning behavior change interventions. In St Helena, a MAP-based training program has significantly enhanced healthcare professionals' capabilities for better performance in consultations and patient support.
A training program evaluated by Wendy Maltinsky and colleagues showed substantial improvements in participants' skills. According to a study published in Healthcare, positive changes in behavior change techniques (BCT) and communication skills were observed post-training.
"Positive changes in BCT and communication skills were recorded comparing participants’ questionnaire data before and after the training."
This initiative has been well-received by healthcare staff on the island, with increased confidence noted among practitioners—suggesting sustained improvements in patient interactions. With this engaging approach, St Helena's healthcare landscape is poised for notable advancements in managing long-term conditions.
