New research indicates tranexamic acid (TXA) reduced early postoperative pain and ecchymosis when added to tumescent solution during arm liposuction.

The researchers, publishing in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, conducted a double-blind, randomized contralateral study that included 78 adult patients undergoing arm liposuction who received TXA in one arm and placebo in the contralateral arm. The study included patients aged 18 to 60 year (mean age of 37.6 years) and a mean BMI of 24.7 kg/m². The majority (78.2%) were female.

According to the team’s postoperative assessments, there were lower pain scores and reduced bruising in TXA-treated arms on day 1 compared with placebo-treated arms. There were no significant differences in arm circumference. There were no reported adverse effects attributable to TXA.

“Adding TXA to tumescent solution for arm liposuction significantly reduces pain and bruising, improving patient recovery,” the authors wrote. “Our randomized trial confirms TXA’s safety and effectiveness, highlighting its potential as a valuable tool in body contouring procedures and postoperative care.”
