Study Supports PLLA-SCA for Décolletage Rejuvenation

Poly-L-lactic acid for injectable suspension (PLLA-SCA; Sculptra, Galderma) was effective and well tolerated for correction of moderate to severe décolletage wrinkles using either 8-mL or 17-mL reconstitution volumes, according to findings from a 9-month, open-label study published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology.
The randomized study included 30 women with moderate or severe wrinkles on the Galderma Décolletage Scale (GDS). Participants were assigned 1:1 to receive PLLA-SCA reconstituted with either 8 mL or 17 mL sterile water for injection, plus 1 mL of 2% lidocaine. Patients could receive up to 4 treatments, administered 1 month apart.
At month 9, the study’s primary endpoint, most participants achieved at least a 1-point improvement on investigator-assessed GDS scores. Improvement was reported in 93.8% of patients in the 8-mL group and 78.6% of patients in the 17-mL group. At month 6, at least 93% of participants in both groups also showed improvement.
Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale findings were similarly favorable, with more than 90% of participants in both groups rated as improved at months 6 and 9. Patient-reported outcomes also supported durability of response: more than 90% of participants in both groups reported satisfaction with the appearance of their wrinkles by month 3, and satisfaction was sustained through the study. More than 80% of participants reported satisfaction with skin texture, smoothness, and radiance at months 6 and 9.
One adverse event was considered treatment related. No adverse events were serious or led to study discontinuation.
“Treatment of the décolletage area with PLLA-SCA was effective and well tolerated with both reconstitution volumes, with high subject satisfaction,” the authors wrote.
