SEEN Launches Dermatologist-Designed Clarifying Shampoo as Scalp Care Trend Surges

As scalp care continues to gain momentum within the broader beauty and wellness industry, dermatologist-founded brand SEEN is expanding its portfolio with the launch of its new Scalp Clarifying Shampoo, a product designed to bridge the gap between hair care and skin care.

The shampoo, formulated for all hair types and safe for sensitive skin, aims to deeply yet gently cleanse the scalp—removing buildup, excess oil, hard water deposits, and environmental impurities—while helping users extend time between washes.

The launch comes amid growing consumer awareness around scalp health, a shift one dermatologist says is long overdue.

“There is a lot of awareness on the importance of scalp care right now,” Geeta Shah, MD, FAAD, Dermatologist at Capital Laser & Skin Care, told Practical Dermatology. “With the use of many hair care products, this can cause buildup on the scalp leading to dryness, irritation, and sensitivity. The scalp is a part of our skin, and it is essential to utilize products that specifically address scalp care.”

SEEN’s latest formula is positioned as both a clarifying and skin-conscious solution. According to the brand, the shampoo removes 92% of buildup after a single use in lab testing, while 94% of participants in a four-week consumer study reported their hair stayed cleaner longer.

The formulation includes ingredients such as:

  • Sarcosine, to help combat pollution and product buildup
  • Propanediol Caprylate, a naturally derived detoxifying agent
  • Bisabolol, known for its soothing properties
  • A chelating agent to remove hard water deposits

It is free from dyes, sulfates, silicones, parabens, phthalates, gluten, and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives. The product is also designed to be non-comedogenic, non-irritating, and safe for acne- and eczema-prone skin (fragrance-free version), aligning with SEEN’s broader mission to treat hair care as an extension of skin care.

Industry experts have pointed to scalp care as a key growth category, particularly for dermatologists who frequently address hair and scalp concerns in clinical settings.

“Dermatologists are in a unique position to promote and encourage scalp health,” Dr. Shah said. “Patients often bring up scalp and hair issues, with hair loss being a major topic that many adults experience. This is a key time that we can bring up scalp care and discuss products that address scalp irritation and buildup.”

As consumers increasingly connect scalp health to hair quality and retention, brands such as SEEN are leaning into clinical credibility and ingredient transparency to differentiate themselves.

SEEN, founded by Harvard-trained dermatologist Iris Rubin, MD, FAAD, has built its reputation on creating hair care products that are safe for sensitive, acne-prone, and eczema-prone skin. The new clarifying shampoo continues that approach while addressing a common gap in the market.

“Many scalp-clarifying shampoos can strip color, but SEEN clarifying shampoo is color safe, which is hugely beneficial,” Shah noted. “The fact that SEEN products fully address scalp issues by using gentle ingredients that calm and clarify the scalp, while eliminating ingredients that can irritate, is a game-changer.”

Designed for use once or twice weekly in place of regular shampoo, the product aims to deliver a balance of deep cleansing and skin barrier support—an increasingly important combination as consumers adopt more complex hair care routines.
