A global Delphi study has established holistic treatment goals for generalized pustular psoriasis (GPP), integrating both physician and patient perspectives.
The consensus study included participants from 24 countries, and according to the authors, provides a comprehensive framework for managing the life-threatening condition. Some of the key overarching principles emphasized timely, multidisciplinary interventions to prevent severe complications and optimize patient outcomes. The study highlighted the importance of short-term goals like fever resolution within three days, prevention of new pustule formation, and substantial reductions in pain and fatigue. Long-term goals should on sustained disease control, minimizing flare frequency, and improving patient quality of life (QoL) through measurable outcomes [such as the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI)].
Incorporating patient perspectives was a central feature of the study, according to the researchers, to ensure that guidelines address issues affecting daily life (such as hair and nail loss). This marks a significant step forward in aligning treatment approaches with real-world patient needs and improving shared decision-making in GPP care.
"This is the first Delphi consensus study in GPP to incorporate patient perspectives and GPP-specific clinical endpoints, offering clear guidance for healthcare professionals and holistic treatment goals for patients," the authors wrote in the study. "This patient-centric consensus provides a foundation for shared decision-making and evidence-based treatment of GPP."
