New Study Supports Combined Approach for Facial Rejuvenation

microneedling
01/23/2026

New research in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology supported the use of combined radiofrequency microneedling (RFMN) and 1927 nm thulium (Tm) laser treatment versus RFMN monotherapy for lower face and neck rejuvenation in photoaged skin.

The study aimed to assess whether the addition of Tm laser could improve clinical outcomes without increasing adverse effects or downtime. The study population included 53 patients (26 receiving the combined RFMN plus Tm laser treatment, and 27 received RFMN monotherapy). Patients in the combination cohort underwent 1 to 3 RFMN sessions immediately followed by Tm laser, with three additional Tm laser treatments at 6- to 8-week intervals. The researchers used validated grading scales, submental volume measurements via computer-assisted analysis, and standardized colorimetric analysis for skin tone for data analysis.

According to the data, both groups showed significant improvements in submental volume and skin laxity, with no difference between them. The combination group demonstrated superior outcomes in pigmentation improvement and skin tone evenness, however, and only the combined treatment group showed quantifiable improvements in hyperpigmented lesions based on color analysis. Blinded reviewers noted enhanced improvements in the melomental area, jawline, and neck across both groups; the combination group was rated more favorably in overall appearance. Pain levels were manageable in both cohorts, and no serious adverse events were reported.

"Both treatment modalities effectively addressed lower facial and neck laxity," the authors wrote. "The addition of Tm laser to RFMN provided additional benefits in treating pigmentary irregularities and improving overall clinical outcome without notably compromising downtime."
