JAK Inhibitors May Help Eosinophilic Colitis in AD Patients

12/13/2024

Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors show promise in managing eosinophilic colitis (EoC) in adults with coexisting atopic dermatitis (AD), according to results from a novel case series.

Researchers publishing in The Clinical Journal of Gastroenterology presented four cases of adult EoC successfully treated with JAK inhibitors, specifically baricitinib and upadacitinib, originally prescribed for AD. The first case involved a 23-year-old woman receiving baricitinib for AD who developed EoC after discontinuing the medication during a wheat food challenge test; diagnosis was confirmed by colonic eosinophil infiltration. Three additional cases—two men aged 26 and 40, and a 29-year-old woman—were treated with upadacitinib. All patients saw meaningful symptom relief and histological resolution of colonic eosinophils, along with improvements in abdominal symptoms and skin lesions within two weeks (for some patients).

"To the best of our knowledge, this is the first novel clinical observational case report on the efficacy of JAK inhibitors in treating adult patients with both EoC and AD," the authors wrote.
