FACTORFIVE Skincare has announced a dichloroacetic acid (DCA) formulation of its Renew Dermal Solution (RDS) chemical peel as California prepares to restrict cosmetic products containing intentionally added trichloroacetic acid (TCA) beginning January 1, 2027.

According to the Chico, California–based company, the new product replaces TCA with DCA in RDS1 Penetrating Solution. The second step, RDS2 Calming Solution, remains unchanged and contains human stem cell conditioned media, copper peptide, and botanical extracts. FACTORFIVE said it will continue offering the original TCA formulation in jurisdictions where permitted.

California Assembly Bill 496, signed in 2023, added TCA to a list of ingredients prohibited in cosmetics under specified statutory conditions. DCA is not specifically named among the ingredients listed in the legislation, according to the company’s announcement.

Product Identification and Practice Considerations

FACTORFIVE said RDS1 vials will be labeled to distinguish the DCA and TCA formulations and that practitioners should use the instructions corresponding to each product. The company also encouraged California practices to review inventory and seek guidance about applicable requirements before the January deadline.

“When we learned of the new California legislation, we immediately got to work reimagining the chemistry,” said John Aylworth, founder and chief executive officer of FACTORFIVE, in the company’s announcement.

David Stachura, the company’s chief scientific officer and chief operating officer, said the reformulation maintains the existing two-step treatment system.
