Private equity investment in dermatology continues at a rapid pace in 2026, with buyer demand remaining strong despite more than a decade of consolidation across the specialty, according to a new market update from Physician Growth Partners.

Although consolidation began accelerating around 2014, the report notes that most dermatology practices remain independently owned. More than 30 private equity-backed organizations are actively pursuing acquisitions, and ecent recapitalizations have injected fresh capital into the market, increasing competition for high-quality practices.

Strong Demand, Limited Supply Fuel Dermatology Investment

The report cites several market dynamics supporting investment. An aging population, growing demand for medical and cosmetic dermatology services, and ongoing workforce shortages continue to create favorable long-term fundamentals. Skin cancer remains the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States, while millions of Americans require ongoing management for chronic conditions including acne, eczema, and psoriasis.

At the same time, cosmetic procedures continue to expand as patients increasingly seek minimally invasive aesthetic treatments, creating diversified revenue streams that remain attractive to strategic buyers and investors.

The report also noted that physician supply continues to lag demand, with approximately 14,000 practicing dermatologists serving nearly 346 million Americans. Extended wait times and ongoing recruitment challenges have further strengthened the value of established practices with stable provider networks.
