Expanding Cholera Vaccine Supply Allows Preventive Campaigns to Restart

resumed preventive cholera campaigns after ocv supply restoration what clinicians and programs should expect
02/09/2026

Gavi, UNICEF, and WHO say a restored—and expanding—global oral cholera vaccine (OCV) supply is allowing preventive campaigns to restart after years of constraint.

Initial preventive allocations are directed to Mozambique, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and Bangladesh. The oral cholera vaccine is recommended for individuals older than 1 year.

Global supply is reported to have increased from 35 million doses in 2022 to nearly 70 million doses in 2025, with an initial preventive allocation totaling 20 million doses across three countries.

This first tranche includes 3.6 million doses delivered to Mozambique, 6.1 million doses delivered to the DRC, and 10.3 million doses planned for delivery to Bangladesh, giving programs a concrete baseline for campaign sizing and sequencing within each setting’s risk profile.
