Analysis Shows Gaps in Access to Pediatric Dermatology

Racially minoritized families face persistent and multifactorial barriers when accessing pediatric dermatology care, according to a qualitative study of 32 parents.

The study researchers explored caregiver perspectives through semistructured interviews, focusing on families identifying as American Indian or Alaska Native, Black, and/or Hispanic. Participants (mean age, 38.9 years; 87.5% women) described limited familiarity with dermatology as a specialty and difficulty navigating complex health systems as key obstacles. Structural barriers (low socioeconomic status, geographic distance from care centers, language discordance, and uncertainty surrounding insurance coverage) were also frequently cited.

The data also suggested interpersonal challenges, including perceived poor clinician communication, lack of racial representation, confusion around team-based care, and distrust in the health care system. Long wait times and assumptions about high costs were also cited as reasons for delays in care.

Care facilitators included strong parental advocacy, prior exposure to dermatology services, and referrals from primary care clinicians. Social normalization of dermatologic care (through community dialogue and social media, according to the paper) was perceived as improving awareness and engagement.

Study participants viewed the interview process itself as empowering, offering an opportunity to voice concerns and reflect on experiences.

“These findings suggest that minoritized families have unique experiences when accessing pediatric dermatology care, underscoring the need for systemic changes to promote health equity and improve patient-centered care,” the authors wrote.
