A research team from Skoltech, the University of Sharjah, and the AIRI Institute has developed an AI-powered system to analyze retinal images, potentially transforming how diabetic retinopathy is diagnosed. This innovation could significantly improve early detection and reduce the risk of blindness associated with diabetes-related eye disease. By automating the segmentation of blood vessels in retinal images, the AI model eliminates human error and drastically cuts down examination time.

Advancing Retinal Image Analysis With AI

Diagnosing diabetic retinopathy typically requires manual image segmentation, a time-consuming process that depends heavily on physician expertise. The new AI system, described in Pattern Recognition Letters, automates this task, providing instant results that ophthalmologists can quickly review. One of the key advancements is its ability to accurately identify microvessels—crucial indicators of diabetic retinopathy and other vascular diseases—where previous models struggled. The system achieved over 97% accuracy and more than 84% sensitivity on the industry-standard DRIVE dataset, marking a significant improvement in diagnostic precision.
