As patient interest in facial aesthetic and reconstructive procedures continues to grow, the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) is emphasizing the importance of specialty training through a new public education framework: the “Three Rs of the AAFPRS:” rhinoplasty, rejuvenation, and reconstruction.

AAFPRS President Anthony Brissett, MD, FACS, introduced the Three Rs at a recent media briefing, framing them as the foundational pillars of facial plastic surgery and a clear way to distinguish the specialty’s depth of expertise.

“They underscore the level of training, precision, and responsibility that comes with operating on the most visible and most personal part of the human body,” Dr. Brissett stated in a press release.

Rhinoplasty remains the most commonly performed surgical procedure among AAFPRS members, according to the organization's 2024 annual survey. Facial plastic surgeons are uniquely trained in both the cosmetic and functional aspects of nasal surgery, with a focus on harmonizing structure, breathing, and appearance.

Rejuvenation includes both surgical and non-surgical procedures tailored exclusively to the face and neck. Nearly 90% of AAFPRS surgeons perform facelifts annually. Notably, the average age of facelift patients is trending younger, with individuals aged 35–55 now comprising up to 32% of the patient base, an increase from as low as 26% in prior years. Two-thirds of AAFPRS members anticipate this younger trend will continue.

Reconstruction addresses trauma, congenital conditions, and disease-related defects, restoring not only appearance but also function and confidence. It remains a core part of facial plastic surgery training and practice.

“Together, these 3 areas illustrate what sets facial plastic surgeons apart,” Dr. Brissett said. “Our training is entirely focused on the face, head, and neck.”
