Lasers may provide a means of closing surgical incisions that is better than traditional methods in terms of infection risk, time, and scarring. Dr. Abraham Katzir, professor of applied medical physics at Tel Aviv University, and a pioneer of this technique, explains to host Dr. Jason Birnholz how the Applied Physics Group at Tel Aviv University was able to develop a device that could control the temperature of the laser, to bond tissue without doing damage. Dr. Katzir outlines how surgeons would use the device, the current human applications, and the potential application of this device on all kinds of human tissues, including the retina, blood vessels, and skin. Tune in to hear how laser welding could replace the thread for closing external and internal wounds.
