    Activity Overview
    In this engaging discussion-based, CME-certified Webcast, two expert transplant nephrologists from Duke University Health System explain the updates to the kidney allocation system and discuss how these changes will affect patient care, referring clinicians, and transplant centers.

    Learning Objectives
    Upon completion, participants should be able to:

    • Explain the rationale and objectives for the new kidney allocation scheme    
    • Understand how the revised kidney allocation policy addresses outcome objectives including maximizing transplant outcomes and reducing waiting times for historically disadvantaged patient populations
    • Anticipate the practical impact of the new kidney allocation scheme on patients and referring clinicians

    Target Audience
    The primary target audience for this activity is community nephrologists, transplant nephrologists, nephrology fellows, transplant coordinators, primary care physicians, and other members of the kidney transplant team.

    Statement of Need
    More than 96,000 people are currently listed for kidney transplantation nationwide, and roughly 10% of kidney candidates die each year while waiting. Not enough kidneys are donated to meet the need; therefore, it is important to improve outcomes by matching recipients according to the potential function of the kidney and ensuring that as many kidneys as possible are transplanted. The Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) and the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) recently approved a policy regarding the allocation of kidneys from deceased donors that will likely improve patient and transplant outcomes. It is imperative that the members of the kidney healthcare community understand the changes to the policy to improve patient care by maximizing transplant outcomes and reducing waiting times for historically disadvantaged patient populations.
