Wayne McCormick, MD, MPH

    Dr. Wayne C. McCormick is a professor of medicine at the University of Washington, department of medicine, division of gerontology and geriatric medicine, Harborview Medical Center. He is a graduate of Washington University Medical School in St. Louis and of the University of Washington School of Public Health in Seattle. Dr. McCormick did his medical internship, internal medicine residency, and chief residency at Michael Reese Hospital, Chicago, Illinois. He came to Seattle in 1987 for the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program and residency in preventive medicine at the University of Washington, after which he completed a fellowship in geriatrics at UW. He is board certified in internal medicine, preventive medicine and public health, palliative medicine, and geriatrics.

    Dr. McCormick spends his time in clinical and educational work, in clinics, medical wards, and long term care settings, and is lecturer for the geriatrics and end-of-life care modules of the introduction to clinical medicine courses at UW. His research has been concentrated on AIDS and dementia for 20 years - he was co-investigator for the Alzheimer's Disease Patient Registry Study from 1988 to 1992, and the for the Aging Changes in Thought Study and Kame Project from 1992 until now. Since 1992 he has been the medical director of Bailey Boushay House (an AIDS long term care facility and day health center) caring for hundreds of patients with AIDS and cancer yearly during this time. He is section chief of the UW Medicine Long Term Care Service, a team of providers caring for ~700 patients in 20 nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and group homes [approximately one third of whom are receiving end-of-life care]. He is associate medical director for the Sisters of Providence Hospice of Seattle, and is also medical director for the Visiting Nurses Association of the Pacific Northwest, as well as Rosehedge House, a home care agency and adult family home for persons with AIDS. He directs the UW Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program, and consults for the Palliative Care Consultation Service at Harborview Medical Center and University of Washington Medical Center.
