Virginia D. Steen, MD, is Professor of Medicine with Tenure and Rheumatology Fellowship Director at Georgetown University Medical Center, Washington. She is also Chief of the Rheumatology Division. Dr. Steen received her MD from University of Pittsburgh, residency in internal medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, and a fellowship in rheumatology at the University of Pittsburgh where she was on faculty before coming to Georgetown in 1995. She has received many awards including the American College of Rheumatology Clinical Science Award in 1998, Scleroderma Doctor of the Year in 2010 and the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014 from the National Scleroderma Foundation. She received the American College of Rheumatology Excellence in Investigative Mentor Award in 2012, and is a Master of the ACR. She is the chair of the Medical and Scientific Advisory Board of the Scleroderma Foundation. Dr Steen’s primary research interests have been focused on understanding the epidemiology and natural history of the Systemic Sclerosis. Her research has resulted in more than 200 publications many of which are seminal studies on risk factors and outcomes for lung involvement, auto-antibodies, and survival in Scleroderma. She has been very involved in clinical trials in Scleroderma and has been a participant of all 3 of the Scleroderma Lung Studies for interstitial lung disease. She has been the rheumatology representative for the IPF guidelines. She continues to participate in clinical trials for systemic sclerosis, including studies on pulmonary fibrosis.
