Sathyu Sarangi
Sathyu Sarangi

Mr. Satinath Sarangi, known as Sathyu, is a metallurgical engineer-turned-activist who arrived in Bhopal, India, the day after the Union Carbide chemical disaster there in December 1984, and stayed on to become a key figure in the struggle for justice in Bhopal. He is a founding trustee of the Sambhavna Trust Clinic, a non-profit clinic dedicated to the treatment of disaster-affected persons in Bhopal through a combination of traditional holistic medicine and Western-style therapies. More than 100,000 disaster-affected persons suffer from a range of illnesses, affecting nearly every system of the body, which stem from the initial chemical disaster and the ongoing fallout, as toxic agents have leached into the air, water, and soil surrounding the now-derelict Union Carbide factory.

As the founder of the Bhopal Group for Information and Action, Mr. Sarangi has also been a vital leader in the Bhopal movement, advocating on local, state, national and international platforms for medical, economic, social and environmental remediation for the people affected by this tragedy. He is involved with many aspects of the relief efforts, research and publication of studies on the health impacts of the ongoing disaster on Bhopal residents.
