Ron Balkissoon, MD received his Doctor of Medicine from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada in 1988. He completed his residency training in Internal Medicine at the University of Toronto in 1991. He then went on and completed his Pulmonary Medicine/Critical Care training as well as obtaining a Master’s Degree in Clinical Epidemiology in 1994 at McMaster University. He has passed his Canadian Board Certification exams in Internal Medicine and Respiratory (pulmonary) Medicine and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada, FRCP (C) in Respiratory and Internal Medicine (US Board Certification Equivalent). Since being at National Jewish Health Dr. Balkissoon developed and was Director of the Inhalation Challenge Chamber facility for several years, Director of the Pulmonary Fellow’s Continuity Clinic, Co-Chair of the Institutional Review Board (IRB), and Faculty Liaison with the Professional Education Department at National Jewish. Dr. Balkissoon has been in the Who’s Who in Medical Education Directory since 2003, was the Teacher of the Year at National Jewish in 2001 and has been listed in the “Best Doctor’s ” Data Base since 2005. From 1995 to 2012 Dr. Balkissoon was on faculty as Associate Professor at National Jewish Health in Denver with cross appointments in the Departments of Medicine (Pulmonary Division) and Biometrics and Preventive Medicine at the University of Colorado Health Sciences. In 2012 Dr. Balkissoon resigned from the University of Colorado and National Jewish Academic Faculty and currently works as a Contract Pulmonary Consultant at National Jewish Health Center seeing out of state patients exclusively. Dr. Balkissoon has been invited to speak across the United States and Internationally on such topics as severe asthma, COPD, Vocal Cord Dysfunction, chronic cough and occupational lung disease. He has published peer reviewed papers and review articles. Dr. Balkissoon has been an Editor for the Journal of COPD and is currently on the editorial board of the COPD Foundation COPD Journal and writes the Journal Club section for each edition. Dr. Balkissoon’s clinical research interests have included severe asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), Chronic cough, effects of environmental tobacco smoke, occupational/environmental asthma, latex allergy, vocal cord dysfunction and Sarcoidosis.
