Robert Hendel, MD

    Dr. Robert C. Hendel is presently affiliated with Midwest Heart Specialists, a group of more than 50 cardiovascular specialists based in the suburbs west of Chicago. He previously served as director of the Coronary Care Unit and the director of nuclear cardiology in the section of cardiology at Rush University Medical Center, where he remains a professor of medicine. A fellow of the American College of Cardiology (ACC), American Heart Association, and American Society of Nuclear Cardiology (ASNC), he was previously on faculty at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine for almost 10 years. He has authored more than one-hundred scientific papers and written two textbooks.

    Dr. Hendel has served at the national level as the president of ASNC. Dr. Hendel was also president of the Cardiovascular Council of the Society of Nuclear Medicine. More recently, he has focused his attention on quality initiatives for cardiovascular imaging: a member of the Appropriate Use Criteria (AUC) Task Force and Chair of the Evaluation and Implementation of AUC, he has also chaired the writing group for the AUC for the cardiac CT and magnetic resonance and the recently completed update of appropriateness criteria for SPECT myocardial perfusion imaging. Dr. Hendel also served as a member of the steering committee for the Duke-ACC Think Tank meetings on quality in cardiac imaging. Finally, Dr. Hendel is the principal investigator for the ACC Foundation/United Healthcare pilot study for the evaluation of AUC implementation, presented as a late-breaking clinical trial at the ACC's 58th Annual Scientific Session in March 2009.
