Robert Bresalier, MD

    Dr. Robert S. Bresalier is currently professor of medicine in the department of gastrointestinal medicine and nutrition at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, and holds the Birdie J. and Lydia J. Resoft Distinguished Professorship in Gastrointestinal Oncology.

    Dr. Bresalier is a leading researcher in gastrointestinal tumor biology, specifically the role of glycoproteins and carbohydrate binding proteins in tumor progression and metastasis, and their role as tumor-specific markers.  He also directs several longstanding National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded research programs in cancer screening, early detection, and prevention. He has led several pivotal national and international chemoprevention trials for prevention of colorectal neoplasia. He is member of the National Steering Committee of the Prostate, Lung, Colon, and Ovarian Cancer Screening Project, and an investigator of the Early Detection Research Network.

    Dr. Bresalier is an associate editor for the journals Cancer and Cancer Metastasis Reviews, section editor for the journals Current Opinion in Gastroenterology, Current Treatment Options in Gastroenterology, and Colorectal Cancer Reports, has served on the the editorial boards of the journals Gastroenterology, Nature Clinical Practice Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Clinical and Experimental Metastasis, Cancer Metastasis Reviews, and the World Journal of Gastroenterology, and is author and editor of over 250 articles, chapters and reviews in the field of gastroenterology and gastrointestinal oncology. A founding member of the Oncology Section of the American Gastroenterology Association (AGA), he has chaired numerous abstract selection committees since 1987, and has served as chairman of the oncology section of the AGA.

    He has served on numerous state, national and international advisory groups including the Colorectal Cancer Advisory Group of the Michigan Cancer Consortium, the Governing Boards of the International Metastasis Research Society and the International Society for Gastrointestinal Oncology the Colorectal Cancer Screening Committee of the International Digestive Cancer Alliance, and National Institute of Health study sections. He is a frequently-invited speaker and participant in national and international symposia on gastrointestinal cancer, including the prestigious Keystone and Falk symposia and NIH workshops on tumor biology.
