Richard Nicklas, MD
Richard Nicklas, MD

    Dr. Richard A. Nicklas was born in Washington, DC. He received a BA from Cornell University. He then attended George Washington University Medical School. He did his internal medicine residency at George Washington University Hospital and the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and than did two years of a fellowship in allergy and immunology at the University of Michigan. He ran the Fort Myer Allergy Clinic for two years,  for which he received the Army Commendation Medal.

    He is currently on the staff at George Washington Medical Center, where he is clinical professor of medicine. Dr. Nicklas is a board-certified fellow of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI) and has received the AAAAI special recognition award and distinguished service award. He is also a fellow of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI), where he now serves on the board. He has received the ACAAI distinguished service award and the ACAAI distinguished fellow award. He has also received the James J. Leonard award for excellence in teaching internal medicine at the Uniformed Services Universtiy of Health Sciences where he is adjunct clinical professor of medicine. Over the past ten years, he had been a mentor and teacher in the practice of medicine course at George Washington Medical School.

    He has been co-chair of the Joint Task Force on Practice Parameters, which is developing guidelines for the field of allergy and immunology, for the past 15 years. He has served on a number of comittees in both the AAAAI and ACAAI, has served as chair of the asthma diagnosis and treatment interest section of the AAAAI and has over 60 publications on asthma, asthma mortality, guideline development and other topics. He is currently president of the Greater Washington Allergy Asthma and Immunology Society.
