Richard Arakaki, MD
Richard Arakaki, MD

    Dr. Richard Arakaki is currently professor of medicine and chief of the division of endocrinology and metabolism in the department of medicine of the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He has published extensively in both basic science and clinical aspects of endocrinology. He is the principal investigator on the Hawaii Center for the NIH-funded Diabetes Prevention Program Outcome Study. His diabetes research activities include many industry-sponsored projects as well as investigator-initiated diabetes education studies. He also spends his time teaching medical residents and students.

    Dr. Arakaki received his MD from the John A. Burns School of Medicine of the University of Hawaii-Manoa in 1982. He then moved to Houston, Texas, and entered the Baylor College of Medicine Affiliated Hospitals internal medicine residency program. Subsequently, he moved on to an endocrinology and metabolism fellowship at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. After an extended research fellowship in the diabetes branch of the National Institutes of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, he returned to Hawaii and joined the faculty of the department of medicine in the division of endocrinology and metabolism in 1990.
