R. Keith Campbell, BPharm, MBA

    R. Keith Campbell is the former associate dean and is the distinguished professor in diabetes care/pharmacotherapy at the Washington State University College of Pharmacy in Pullman, Washington. He has been a member of the faculty since 1968. He is an active diabetes educator and is involved in numerous diabetes-related activities. He was the chair of the medical advisory board for the Washington State Diabetes Control Project funded by the Center for Disease Control. He has served on numerous committees for the American Diabetes Association, the American Association of Diabetes Educators, and the NIH. He was a member of professional panels that wrote the position statements on blood glucose monitoring for both ADA and AADE and assisted the NIH in translating the famous Diabetes Control and Complications Trial to try to change the treatment objectives of diabetes patients. He has a personal interest in diabetes having had type 1 diabetes for over 60 years. He has used an insulin pump for over 30 years.

    Mr. Campbell has served on the board of directors of the American Diabetes Association and the American Association of Diabetes Educators. He was a founding member of AADE. He also served on the board of trustees of the Diabetes Research and Education Foundation that reviewed 500 grants each year and awarded over a million dollars annually to support education, clinical and basic science research. He has authored over 650 publications and serves on the editorial boards of pharmacy, nursing, medical and lay journals. His scholarly activities primarily focus on diabetes but he has also pioneered programs that enhance the role of the pharmacist in the care of patients with chronic diseases and the ability of pharmacists to improve patient medication compliance. He serves on the advisory boards of the diabetes education program at Pullman Memorial Hospital and the Spokane Community Health Education Resources. He also has worked with numerous managed care organizations to develop diabetes treatment protocols. He has been an advisor or board member to the Spokane Chapters of JDF and ADA.

    Mr. Campbell has been honored by many different groups. He was the first recipient of the "O. Charles Olson, M.D. Lectureship". Students at Washington State University have selected him on four different occasions as the "Faculty of the Year". He was the College of Pharmacy's first recipient of the "Outstanding Alumnus Award". In 1990, he was presented with the University's President's Faculty Excellence Award for public service. In 1988, he was the given the special honor of being named "The Distinguished Person of the Year" for Pharmacist's Planning Service, Inc. and in 1997 was presented by Boehringer Mannheim/Zitter Group with the national Diabetes Management Leadership Award. Most notably, he was named the "Outstanding Health Care Educator in the Field of Diabetes in the United States" in 1989 by the ADA. The American Association of Diabetes Educators presented him with the "Distinguished Service Award". In 1990, the National Association of Retail Druggists named him the "Outstanding Pharmacy Administration Professor in the U.S." His state pharmacy association named him their "Pharmacist of the Year" and he received their Don Katterman Distinguished Endeavors award. He is both a Fellow of the American Society of Health System Pharmacists and the American Pharmaceutical Association. Mr. Campbell is a Certified Diabetes Educator, and served as a consultant to the FDA's and USP's Endocrine panels. He is a popular speaker both nationally and internationally and has made over 1500 presentations to medical, pharmacy, nursing and patient groups. He was director of continuing education for the College of Pharmacy for 28 years and during that tenure developed numerous live and self-study programs.

    In 2000 Washington State University gave him a Distinguished Alumnus Award. In 2003, he was awarded by ACCP with the Paul F. Parker Medal for his sustained impact on the practice of pharmacy. He also is honored with the R. Keith Campbell Endowed Chair in Diabetes Care at Washington State University. With professor John White, Mr. Campbell is author of the book ADA/PDR Medications for the Treatment of Diabetes (2008).
