Dr. Matthias von Herrath is professor and director of the Diabetes Center at La Jolla Institute of Allergy and Immunology in La Jolla, California. Dr. von Herrath is particularly interested in type 1 diabetes research. He is also an adjunct professor in the department of pediatrics at the University of California, San Diego.

Dr. von Herrath received his MD from Freiburg Meidcal School in Freiburg, Germany. He went on to study at teh Freiburg Medical Center, and then completed a residency in intensive care medicine at Duakonic Hospital in Freiburg, Germany. Dr. von Herrath then worked in neuropharmacology at Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California.

Dr. von Herrath is the receipient of numerous awards, including the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation Career Development Award; the George Köhler Award, German Society of Immunology; the JDRF Grotzky Award; and the American Diabetes Association, Outstanding Scientist Achievement award.
