Mark Hlatky, MD

    Dr. Mark Hlatky is a professor of health research and policy and a professor of medicine (cardiovascular medicine) at Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Hlatky is a cardiologist with major research interests in clinical trials, clinical research methods, outcomes research, and medical technology evaluation. Dr. Hlatky has participated in several large, multi-center randomized clinical trials, including studies of coronary revascularization, treatment of acute myocardial infarction, hormone therapy to prevent cardiovascular disease, and management of life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias. He has also conducted large outcomes research studies of sudden cardiac death, implantable cardioverter defibrillators, and the initial clinical presentation of coronary artery disease.

    He served as director of the Stanford-University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Evidence-based Practice Center, and of Stanford's Donald W. Reynolds Cardiovascular Clinical Research Center, which encompasses basic laboratory, genetic, and epidemiologic studies of coronary disease. He is the director of the Stanford-Kaiser Cardiovascular Outcomes Research Center, sponsored by the American Heart Association. Dr. Hlatky is also a member of the Medical Advisory Panel of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Technology Evaluation Center, and of the Medicare Evidence Development and Coverage Advisory Committee.

    Dr. Hlatky earned his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and, after residency at the University of Arizona, studied as a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar at UCSF. He trained in cardiology at Duke University Medical Center, and then joined the Duke faculty. He has been at Stanford since 1989.
