Mark DeLegge, MD
Mark DeLegge, MD

    Dr. Mark DeLegge is a professor of medicine and the director of the Digestive Disease Center at the Medical University of South Carolina. He completed his MD at the University of Maryland, and his internal medicine residency at University of Connecticut Health Center, where he also spent a year as chief resident. Dr. DeLegge completed a three-year fellowship in gastroenterology and nutrition at the Medical College of Virginia. He is board-certified in internal medicine, nutrition, and gastroenterology.

    Dr. DeLegge was awarded the Michael T. Assey Department of Medicine Teaching Award for 2000 - 2001, and in 2003 was named the University Health Science Foundation Outstanding Clinical Physician. He received the Oley Foundation's Nan Couts Award for the Ultimate Volunteer, for his work with patients with chronic nutritional disorders. He lectures both nationally and internationally on a number of topics in gastroenterology and nutrition. He has been involved in the development of educational podcasts and vodcasts, appeared as a frequent guest on radio and television, and is a seasoned radio interviewer.

    Dr. DeLegge initiated the formation of a Hospital Nutrition service at the Medical University of South Carolina, incorporating the efforts of dieticians and pharmacists in the review and management of obese patients and patients on parenteral and enteral nutrition, initiating and completing clinical research and education at a local, regional and national level.

    Dr. DeLegge is a member of several organizations, including the American College of Gastroenterology, American Gastroenterological Association, American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, American Society of Enteral and Parenteral Nutrition, and the American Society for Nutrition Sciences. He is as an associate editor for the journal, Nutrition in Clinical Practice, and serves on the editorial board of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
