Dr. Juan Ochoa is a board certified general surgeon and critical care physician. Currently, he directs the surgical intensive care unit at Ochsner Medical Center/Jefferson campus in New Orleans, LA. His ICU cares for patients with highly complex surgical critical illness including but not limited to liver, heart, lung, kidney and pancreas transplantation, patients requiring cardiac mechanical support, septic shock and others. Dr. Juan Ochoa's training includes: two general surgery residencies (abroad and at University of Pittsburgh), critical care and research fellowships. The focus of his practice is and has always been that of serving the patient. Academically, he focus his efforts at understanding the distinct nutrition requirements of critically ill and surgical patients. Starting in a Petri dish in the laboratory, his work has contributed to the understanding of arginine deficiency states, its clinical consequences and the implementation of clinical practices aimed at restoring arginine availability.
