John J. Russell, MD

    John J. Russell, MD is a graduate of Temple University and the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine. He completed his Family Medicine training at Abington Memorial Hospital, serving as Chief Resident, and joined the faculty in 1993. He currently is the Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program at Abington Memorial Hospital. He has served as contributing editor for several primary publications and has been a reviewer and contributor to American Family Physician. He has worked on the palm-based guidelines for the American Diabetes Association and The Infectious Disease Society of America. He has done several recent video CME projects for AAFP on Diabetes and Atrial fibrillation available on their website. Until recently, he did a twice a month a journal review podcast "Clinical Update" for AAFP. He also now does a monthly podcast on diabetes for the ADA (The Diabetes Core Update). He is co-author of the text, Dermatology Skills in Primary Care. Dr. Russell lectures extensively to primary care physicians on a national level and has won several resident teaching awards. He was named a "Top Doctor" in Family Medicine by Philadelphia magazine as well as US News and World Report . He currently serves as President of The Abington Hospital Medical Staff. For the last 6 years he has been Chairman of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee at Abington. His special interests include pediatrics, dermatology, cardiology, pharmacology, medical history, and bioethics.
